What Actually Happens at a Luxury Wellness Retreats

For years, my entire idea of a "spa day" on vacation was just finding whatever was cheap. I usually don't care about luxury. I just assumed paying fifty bucks for a rubdown in some windowless hotel basement was the only way to do it.

But someone dragged me to one of those crazy expensive wellness spots in the Himalayas last winter. It completely ruined normal spas for me.

The last time I did a budget "wellness package" in Bali, it was just terrible. If you haven't done one... they just pack twenty of you into a crowded waiting room that smells like cheap chlorine from the pool outside. The therapist leads you into a tiny room with thin walls, turns on some generic flute music from an iPhone speaker, and rubs you with greasy oil for an hour. The oil never washes out. I ruined three good shirts because the hotel shower had zero water pressure. You spend half the massage listening to someone vacuuming in the hallway. Then you walk out and have to wait in line at the register behind five other people just to pay.

Doing this yourself is exhausting. You spend hours looking at fake Yelp reviews on your phone, and you still wind up stuck in a crowded room smelling whoever is stretching next to you. You literally come home needing a vacation from your vacation.

Another thing about the cheap retreats is the constant upselling. The spas have strict time limits. They literally knock on the door the second your sixty minutes are up. Then they try to sell you heavily overpriced face creams while you are trying to put your shoes on. I hate it. Absolutely loathe it. You spend half the afternoon annoyed instead of relaxed.

And the healthy food at budget places is just always fine. Never great. Just fine. A weird buffet of lukewarm tofu, instant green tea, and dry salads. You chew on raw kale and pretend you're enjoying it.

I was expecting high-end wellness travel to feel pretentious. I figured it was basically just a bunch of rich people drinking celery juice on a giant white couch. I thought it would feel fake and I'd leave stressed out.

It wasn't. The whole vibe is totally different. There wasn’t any rushing or crowded lobbies.

The Doctor Who Ruined Spicy Food For Me

When we walked into the Himalayan retreat, they didn’t just point us to a front desk. A doctor—this incredibly calm guy named Dr. Sharma—actually came out. The guy didn't even mention the bill. He just checked my pulse, stared at my tongue for a second, and asked why my sleep schedule was garbage. Then he mapped out my whole week. He called my body type "pitta dominant" and straight up banned me from eating anything spicy. I was actually pretty annoyed.

Four days in, my head was just pounding from not having any coffee. Dr. Sharma walked over and handed me this hot, dark green liquid. It tasted exactly like dirt and pepper. I chugged it, and the headache just vanished in twenty minutes.

You don't usually order off a normal spa menu here. You get a personalized program. The therapists just look at your chart and do whatever your body actually needs that day.

Boiling Out the Bad Stuff

Look at Panchakarma. I always thought "detox" was just a scam where they charge you to drink lemon water. It doesn't. Panchakarma is this intense thing they do down in Kerala where they basically boil the bad stuff out of you with hot oil and steam for a week straight. It sounds completely insane. But it actually works. You eat this incredibly bland rice porridge called kitchari for days. By day three, you are dreaming about cheeseburgers. You question why you paid to starve yourself. But then day five hits, and suddenly your brain fog just evaporates. I could remember names of people I met ten years ago. It’s weird. You literally can't get this level of healing at a local strip mall.

They also do this thing called sound healing. I completely laughed at it until I actually did it. You literally just pass out on a wooden floor while a guy hits some metal bowls. The sound waves literally just force your body to go to sleep. I woke up an hour later completely disoriented but feeling amazing. Though, to be totally honest, nobody warns you that lying completely still on a hardwood floor for 70 minutes destroys your lower back if you don't ask for an extra bolster. I could barely stand up afterward.

Stop Trying to Book in the Winter

Booking these trips takes some patience, mostly because you have to time the seasons right. Everyone assumes you should go to Kerala in the sunny winter. You shouldn't. The best time for Ayurvedic treatment is actually during the heavy monsoon season in July and August. The air is damp, your pores open up, and the body absorbs the herbal oils way better.

I gave up trying to piece these trips together myself. Just hand some cash to a premium resort to handle your entire existence for a week.

We stayed at this one place up in the mountains. The cooks didn't even have a set menu. The kitchen guys just went out back, pulled whatever vegetables were ripe from the dirt, and cooked them for us based on whatever the doctor told them to make. They gave me this heavy pumpkin and coconut curry one night. It was entirely vegan but somehow tasted better than most steaks I've had. I didn't even miss meat.

You wake up and there's hot herbal tea waiting outside your door. You literally just kill the afternoon staring at the fog from your balcony or walking through the woods.

I Ruined Three Good Shirts For This

You can't just pack normal vacation clothes for this, either. I usually just throw jeans in a bag. Do that here and you'll be miserable. You spend half the day covered in herbal oil anyway, so just bring cheap, baggy cotton pants you don't care about ruining.

Also, it is absolutely freezing in the mountains before sunrise. Everyone thinks India or Bali is just constantly hot. It’s not. I hate mornings. Absolutely loathe them. But when the fog rolled off the valley at 5:45 AM and someone placed a hot clay cup of tulsi tea in my freezing hands before a yoga class, I couldn't even bring myself to complain. Bring a heavy fleece.

And leave the laptop at home. The Wi-Fi at these places is intentionally terrible. They want you to disconnect.

The Obscene Amount of Money It Costs

The price tag is going to hurt. You're dropping serious cash per night.

A week staying at a place like Ananda in the Himalayas cost me more than my last used car. Even now, looking at my bank statement, I feel slightly sick seeing that charge. It's an obscene amount of money for a vacation. Honestly, the consultation fees alone still make me wince.

But when you look at where the money goes, it makes sense. It’s the expertise. You are basically paying for the logistics of getting top-tier doctors, chefs, and therapists to focus entirely on your physical and mental health in the middle of a forest.

You actually remember the trip. A cheap massage in a tourist trap is forgotten the next day. But actually feeling your stress vanish while sitting in a private pavilion in the Himalayas is something you don't forget.

I'm just completely done wasting my time on bad massages. Every time I tried to budget my wellness trips, I just felt gross and annoyed the whole time. It completely ruins your tolerance for being miserable. You eventually realize you don't actually have to be stressed out on vacation just to save some money.

Anyway, my flight back landed on a Tuesday. The airport was a disaster. Customs took two hours. By Thursday, I was stuck on the freeway, already late for a Zoom call, and drinking terrible gas station coffee. I opened my laptop to four hundred unread emails. It was chaos. But my shoulders weren't up to my ears for once. I actually took a deep breath before walking into the office. That has to count for something.
